Storytelling is NOT Dead: Ang Mamatay Nang Dahil Sa’Yo, Launch of Shorts

Tales as old as time. True – and definitely fun as it can be.

Storytelling has been an age-old tradition passed down many generations throughout our history. And yet, it never failed to be a fool-proof way to spend a fun time with family and friends. This was proven true as Shorts launched it’s very first theme night, Ang Mamatay Nang Dahil Sa’Yo, last 22 November 2019 at Gourmet Gypsy Art Cafe in Maginhawa, Quezon City.

Shorts is an open mic storytelling event patterned after the NPR Podcast, The Moth and is inspired by various community events, radio programs, and podcasts. Owens Disini, the producer of Shorts, envisioned a community coming together from different walks of life and sharing stories that ultimately become a collective human experience that would educate, delight, and enlighten storytellers and listeners.

Ang Mamatay Nang Dahil Sa’Yo featured 8 Shorts-Listed Storytellers who shared different interpretations of the concept of death: dealing with loss of a loved one, sacrifices out of love, emotional “death” and pain, and more. These storytellers were Robert Bunagan, Waya Araos (owner of Gourmet Gypsy Art Cafe), Queenie Linson, Rado Dimalibot, Larry Mapolon, Raina Galut, and Owens Disini (producer of Shorts). Meanwhile, the event was hosted by Lance Al Francis Daniel of UP SPECA and was also joined by a few UP Diliman students who serenaded the audience.

The Shorts launch was made possible by a number of collaborators: UP Speech Communication Association, TVUP, and its partner venue, Gourmet Gypsy Art Cafe. A mix of college students and young professionals came to celebrate life through the speakers’ creative and personal anecdotes. A recording of the whole show, as well as short clips of each of the stories, are made available in Shorts’ YouTube channel and website for public viewing so people can relive the night and hear the stories all over again.

The next Shorts theme night is coming shortly on January 2020, with the theme 7 Deadly Sins. Make sure to follow Shorts on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/short8ph) and be updated on the next theme night and other event announcements.
